Second Tuesday of every month at 5:30PM. Starting with our November 2018 meeting we will meet at the Sallisaw First Baptist Church across the street from the Sallisaw Police Department. We will meet here until further notice. Please let those who don't get on Facebook know about this change of location. Our meeting time is still on the second Tuesday of every month with doors opening around 5pm and the meeting starting at 6pm. (Our post does not have the facilities to accommodate a public food and/nor alcohol business.) We presently do not have our own facility where we could accommodate other groups/organization. Unfortunately we do not expect to obtain a facility of our own in the near future but we have been working toward one. When we do have our own facility we will let people know through this website, our Facebook page, Twitter and other means.
Our mailing address has changed from the one shown on the top of the page to P.O. Box 935, Sallisaw, Oklahoma 74955
I was able to set up a new X/Twitter account and it is now available. Our new username is @ALOKPost27. The first post on the new account mentions about our preparation to speak to eleventh grade students about this year's Oklahoma Boys State and Girls State.
Our website is not only here to let you know about our post and what we are doing, but to also be an educational website. We have added a number of educational pages so everyone (not just students) can learn more our country's history and why some things are done a certain way. We will still update the pages about what is happening with our post.
The Oklahoma American Legion/Carnie Welch Post 27 was chartered and ratified the first of August 1920 by the American Legion National Headquarters. Post 27 was so named in remembrance of Sequoyah County resident Carnie Welch of the Price Chapel community who gave his life in defense of our great nation during World War I.
The post and its auxiliary have a few fundraisers each year to help finance projects it is involved in and organizations like the Scouts, the upkeep of the American flags we place on veterans' grave sites as well as place we put them around town for certain holidays and to help with our yearly delegates to Boys State/ Girls State when not enough sponsors can be found and the family cannot afford to send them. Our honor guard has two primary ceremonies it participates in which are for Veterans Day and Memorial Day celebrations though they have participated in other events and ceremonies.
We also support Boys State which is a yearly gathering of youths from around the state at a chosen location. At Boys State the young men will learn the basics on how government works and may lead them to a more active roll in their home community as they grow older. It offers them a chance to meet others across the state and a possibility to be elected to a group to represent our state at the national level of Boys State. Our Auxiliary supports Girls State which is a female version of Boys State which is no less the equal in importance or a place to learn.
We provide public speakers for area schools/organizations during certain holidays and at certain events when possible. Sometimes we will have literature which we will hand out which can cover such subjects as patriotism, safety, being friends instead of being a bully, etc.
We look forward to meeting other veterans and welcome them to come to our meetings. It is always up to the individual whether or not to join the American Legion. Yes, there are guidelines put out by our national headquarters we have to follow and some of them are updated as time goes on. We also welcome the sons of those veterans since there is the Sons of the American Legion. The daughters of our veterans can check into joining the Daughters of the American Legion through the American Legion Auxiliary. These are some things that many do not know about the American Legion, but we would be glad to provide the information. Some of this information can be searched on the American Legion National Headquarters' website at http://www.legion.org/ or the American Legion Auxiliary Headquarters' website at https://www.alaforveterans.org/.
We also have a Facebook page which people can keep up with our activities. Our Facebook page is Carnie Welch American Legion Post27. We have more photographs there for people to see. We also post reminders of our up coming meetings and activities. The URL is https://www.facebook.com/SallisawAmericanLegionPost27/ or you can use the link provided.
